30+25 = ?

1. Learn Math subtraction & addition through Math Learning Game ! As I always say in the classroom, practices make perfect! Don't be afraid to make a mistake. Using this interactive math game, you will have fun with solving questions.

How to play: Use a pen with your mouse and calculate the problem. Then click on the correct answer on your right.
2. You will be amazed how easy math could get with Adding Two Digit Numbers with Regrouping (Carrying) ! I'll surely go over this strategy with you next class. Meanwhile, you could go to the link above and try it on your own before coming to the class. It will be very helpful!
The Ontario Curriculum - Unit: Number Sense and Numeration
Specific Expectation
  • solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers, using a variety of mental strategies

Natural Phenomena - Erosion

Heavy rains and water run-off naturally erode soil. Humans make erosion happen faster by cutting down trees, removing shrubs and plants, and having too many animals on farmland. When soil is lost through erosion, it pollutes rivers, lakes, and other water systems. When soil is lost on farmlands, farmers cannot grow as many crops. Depleted soil produces crops that provide less nourishment to people.

To understand this concept more clearly and in a fun way, I now introduce you to Bill Nye the Science Guy! Ta-ra! In this episode, Bill explores the science of erosion. This series of videos starts with what eronsion is all about and ends with answering what action humans can take to help prevent erosion.

1.
Erosion part 1

2. Erosion part 2

3. Erosion part 3

The Ontario Curriculum - Unit: Understanding Matter and energy
Specific Expectation

  • Assess the effect of the action of forces in nature on the natural and built environment, and identify ways in which human activities can reduce or enhance this impact

Basic needs of plants

Plants have distinct characteristics. This interactive flash, Helping plants grow well, provides specific examples of differences among plants of the same kind. It is important that you understand this concept very well. If you have deep understanding of this material, it will be so much easier for you to assess ways in which plants have an impact on society and the environment later in the unit.
The Ontario Curriculum - Unit : Understanding Life Systems
  • Specific Expectation - Describe the basic needs of plants, including air, water, light, warmth, and space.

Graphing your own data using a bar graph

Graph data related to "How I divide my 24 hour day", using a vertical bar graph. Why does the scale on the vertical axis include axis include values that are not in the set of data?
Now, you are going to use an Interactive Bar Graph to finish this project. You should enter your own data, set the X and Y axis, and generate the result. In the end, you should print out your output for tomorrow's class discussion on graphing.

The Ontario Curriculum - Mathmatics
Unit - Data Management and Probablity
  • specific expectation - collect and organize catergorical or discrete primary data and display the data in charts, tables, and graphs, with appropriate titles and labels and with labels ordered appropriately along horizontal axes, as needed, using many-to-one correspondance

Fun Activities and Games for our students

Looking for activities to show your child the fun side of learning? From science experiments and math games to writing projects and more, they've got you covered! Use the selector on the right to browse around, or narrow your search by subject area. In third grade, learning gets kicked up a notch, and more complex concepts will land squarely on your child's plate. Want to help, but aren't sure how? From fun activities to learn about place value, to outdoor games that teach parts of speech, we've got the goods to keep your child on track all year long. Fun Activities for Grade three

1.
Grow Salt Crystals!

Crystals are a very special structure. They grow in a pattern that is organized and three dimensional, without any help from us. Most crystals take years to form under pressure and heat, and they have strong attractions that draw them together into their patterns. In this activity, we are going to grow salt crystals!

2. Graph Your Household Energy Use

Chances are, you find yourself saying it to your kids all the time: "Turn off the lights!" As energy costs rise and households continue to look for more ways to cut back, why not involve your third grader, too? Here's an activity that gives your third grader a chance to pull out her addition and multiplication skills to help your whole family take a good look at what those lights really do use up. Then, challenge your third grader to use the data to create bar graphs. What does it take to make those numbers go down?

3. Shared reading for this week - Summer begins

Since last week, we have been reading the first three episodes of Summer begins in the class. Luckily, I found a website that contains an electronic copy of this book and you can now continue to read this book at home if you desire to do so.

4. Enjoy a Flash Game with numbers - This week's online game is Math Baseball !

Hello Grade 3's

Our third term is going to be lots of fun! We are starting a The Solar System Unit in Science! This unit is a study of the structure of the solar system, the characteristics of the members of that system, and a more detailed look at the rotations and revolutions of the Earth and the Moon. If you would like to get a head-start on this unit, feel free to check out some of the following websites on solar system :
Solar System
I have also included the following link to the Mississauga Public Library. It holds a Readers Club at various branches in the Mississauga area - find the branch closest to you! There are many other programs available at this time, so please take a look! If you find a program that interests you, ask your parents if they think it would be fun and helpful for you and ask them nicely if they would mind taking you. Here is the website: The Mississauga Library System

If you want to see more online resources that might be beneficial to you or/and your parents, please do not hesitate to send me an email about it.
Ms.Lee I am always here for you!

See you all in the class tomorrow!
